littleBits

littleBits is the electronic building block that has transformed STEM education for millions of kids around the world through empowering kids of all ages to invent, create and play. littleBits Electronics raised over 70M from prominent investors in Silicon Valley and New York and the company was acquired by Sphero in 2019 to form a leader in STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). Today, more than 20 million “Bits” are in the hands of kids, teachers, parents, artists… in over 70 countries. And littleBits has won over 150 awards including Toy of the Year.

Founding Statement

We spend more than 11 hours with electronic devices every single day, but most of us don’t know how they work, or how to make our own.

How can we solve the challenges we face today if we don’t understand the world we live in? We believe that to solve 21st century challenges—economic, environmental, medical—we don’t need more, we need smarter. Tomorrow’s sense of pride will come from inventing the future.d

littleBits is leading a hardware renaissance where everyone, regardless of age, gender, technical ability, or discipline, can be creative with electronics and reinvent their world.

With over 60 interchangeable Bits and trillions of billions of combinations, we are moving electronics from late stages of the design process to its earliest ones, and from the hands of experts, to the hands of everyone.

Whether you’re a young maker starting your creative journey, a professional engineer wanting to cut down prototyping time, a designer or entrepreneur with the next billion dollar idea, or an educator who wants to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers, we believe you should be able to use electronics as a building block.

littleBits is born out of the Maker Movement and we have been helping lead the Open Hardware Movement. That’s why littleBits is open source and building a community of contributors who experiment, share online, and learn from each other’s creativity. Our designs are publicly available so that anyone can see, use and adapt them to their needs.
